According to the third edition of the book Live
Pterosaurs in America, by Jonathan Whitcomb:
Chapter One
“Susan Wooten was driving east on Highway 20, to
the town of Florence, [South Carolina] on a clear
mid-afternoon in the fall of about 1989, following a
girl who lived in her dorm, who was driving ahead.
Where the road was surrounded by woods and
swamps, Wooten saw something flying from her
left, then passing in front of her . . . ‘It swooped
down over the highway and back up gracefully over
the pines,’ but its appearance was shocking: ‘It
looked as big as any car . . . NO feathers, not like a
huge crane or egret, but like a humongous bat.”
Chapter Three
“ . . . It was probably 1982 when me and my older
brother were sitting in our carport at Union Village
Apartments, in Texarkana, AR. It was getting dark
but there was plenty of light in the sky when we
saw what we believe to be a pterodactyle. The
wingspan seemed to be about 25’ to 30’ ft wide. It
was probably about 70’ to 80’ off the ground, flying
over a large tree in front of the house.”
From Appendix of Live Pterosaurs in America:
“How fortunate that Eskin Kuhn was the marine who
stood outside the new barracks on a particular
sunny day around mid-July, 1971! While the other
marines were hanging out inside, this talented artist
was enjoying the lovely weather and looking out
toward the ocean.” [Guantanamo Bay, Cuba]
[Kuhn said:] “I saw two pterosaurs . . . flying
together at low altitude, perhaps 100 feet, very
close in range from where I was standing, so that I
had a perfectly clear view of them.”
[Elaborating on sighting by Kuhn] “The Marine
observed details, later recording them in his sketch:
The head was large in proportion, with a large head
crest; the short ‘hind legs’ were attached to the
trailing part of the wings; the vertebrae were
noticeable; the end of the tail had a ‘tuft of hair.’”
